In Anglo-Saxon times there were 200 million ponds in Britain.
In the old days every village had a pond, somewhere for ducks to forage, horses to be washed and children to swim.
By the end of the 19th Century that figure had fallen to 2 million.
In  2006 Long Itchington pond  was completely renovated to prevent it becoming shallow and almost drying up in the summer.
It was dredged and relined, sides were reinforced and a feeding pier and island was created.
Pond drainage and water supplies were unblocked and now the Pond is once more a healthy and interesting focal point for the village.

The pond also provides a fascinating and educational place for local children to study
biology and ecology.
