Cardio Striptease. | ||

The phrase conjures up all kinds of racy images. But in a world obsessed with the perfect body, cardio striptease is simply the latest way to get in shape. Tame enough to have been featured on a recent episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show," cardio striptease combines aerobics, dance techniques such as ballet and jazz, and elements of burlesque for an intense, toning workout. "It's about having fun and getting a really good workout," said Amber Finkbeiner, 22, who teaches a cardio striptease class. "It's just putting a different spin on exercise, with an emphasis on the attributes of the female body." Sorry, boys, cardio striptease doesn't involve removing any clothing. There are no poles on-site - although there may be a chair or two. And it's not just young ladies taking the class. "People think that it's all college girls or tiny girls that go out dancing every night of the week," Amber said. "But some of the ladies have been 50. People of all ages, shapes and sizes are keeping up and having a great time." In the end, it's a tough, not-so-glamorous workout. "You don't feel sexy afterwards because you're tired and you sweat a lot,". Amber handpicks dance music, mixing hip-hop, Top 40 and even the arena-rock of AC/DC and Def Leppard. Watching the girls at a recent session, it almost seemed as though they were rehearsing choreography to back Rihanna or the Pussycat Dolls in one of the many sexy music videos played on MTV. Even with all the dancing, the class is ideal for non-dancers, women who just like to get down to some hot beats. "It's not very technical," Amber says, "If you like to go out and dance and feel like you're a good dancer, but not in the sense that you took ballet for two years, you'll like this class the most and won't feel frustrated by it." "They're fun, short little dances anyone can do," added Tiffany Talamonti, 21, who is taking the class and will teach an upcoming session. "It's cute, sexy, fun and you can teach all your friends." But if you don't exercise a lot, the class will be a challenge. "I run half-marathons," says Amber "and I find that when I'm teaching this class three times a week, my body is better toned than at the height of my training for those runs." Tiffany nods in agreement"I have never had such a good workout in my life,"
